Disentis/Mustér

Disentis/Mustér is situated in the mountainous region of South-east Switzerland in Kanton Graubünden. Romanisch, the original language of the Swiss people is spoken in this area, German is the second language. Mustér is the Romanisch name for Disentis.

Approaching Disentis/Mustér, you see the impressive Benedictian Monastery, which was founded in 1572. Within the Monastery is the oldest school in Graubünden which opened in 1881. Also located within the Monastery is the history and culture museum.

Besides the many shops, bars and restaurants other local attractions include:

The Crystal Museum, which has a collection of minerals and crystals from this area which is the largest mineral region in Switzerland.

The Alp Transit project, when completed this will be the longest railway tunnel in the World at 57 Km's, providing a high-speed rail link between Zurich and Milan.

Wollkarderei Sax, the oldest, still-working, Woollen Mill in Switzerland, where you can see the process of how wool was manufactured 150 years ago.

The source of the river Rhine, the Thomasee 2344m, is just above Disentis/Mustér, from here the Rhine travels 1324Km's before it reaches the sea at Rotterdam.
